IWB Presentation
last week, we had finally presented on our IWB presentation. We had created 9 slides with different activities based on Grammar. It was a very good experiance while in the process of completing the slides for all of us, especially on the planning of suitable activities for each type of Grammar.
Putting ourselves in the shoes of a teacher, we had efficiently and mind boggingly manage to create some interesting lessons that can be used for students of different level. starting with beginner level lessons, we noved on with higher level activities that can confuse some or otherwise.
nevertheless, it was a goodexperiance all together. This assignment has enables me to gain some basic knowledge of how to use the tools in the IBW software. Moreover, from the other groups' presentations, at elast i was able to obtain other ideas and lessons.
A round of applause to all the class members....
Good Luck in the up-coming exams

Schoolnet
When i left school in 1997, the computer lab in my school was just being popularised and used by a handful of students. basically, majority of us were only starting to learn how to use a computer using the basics such as Word, Note Pad, how to type and so on.
the following year, when the usage of internet was morepopular, with cyber cafe's opened in practically every part of the town, were were more engrossed in chatting and surfing the net. we have moved on ever since, and how much things have chenged, with the schoolnet concept being introduced as well. It was a good start, as students now are more exposed to the internet with usage of Microsoft Office just within their fingertips.
Teachers have the oppurtuinity of using the net to obtain tutorials under the syllabus whereelse the students are able to make their learning proces more interesting and continous by playing games by learning and expanding their basic knowledge.
Therefore, all schools in Malaysia should be provided with internet service for the comfot of the whole school community.

TV Pendidikan
i remember cominng back from school during my rpimary school days and having my luch and immidiately making a move to the television and switching on to TV 2 to watch TV Pendidikan. I made a point only watch the language and based progrrames i.e English, Bahasa Malaysia. Moral and History as i was only interested in watching the stories.
However, having realised only recently that Astro has taken the responsibility on showing TV Pendidikan Programmes over Channel 13 and the fact that they have introduced more programmes when i had attended Technology class recently. Lensa TV,Rancangan Khas and LensaMinda are some of the new programmes being showed.
its something new but a good expansion to promoting and encouraginf students to watch them.
Since Astro shows these programmes from 9-5 every Monday to Thursday and with the new system of enabling us to record, i think it'll be of some use to us, when we become teachers.

What I learning currently.....
My dear friends, I really had a terrible and bad time now as you all now, we are packed with so many assigments and rarely have time to revise our studies. But, in this hectic schedule also, I enjoy doing technology class assigments cause it easier, i no need to make sentences or scraps like other assigments. he...he... he.... just joking.
I really like Farah group presentation and congrats to them for their excellent and wonderful job. My son must like that software very much. Well done.

What I learned in my past class 5
I really had fun during the presentation of my classmates on computer software and others which really make me engage and interactive throughout the class. There are so many software that I can use in teaching. for example, I got idea how to use flash, hot potatoes website, cikgunet etc in the class. I hope in future, i have more time to build for my ownuse and hands-on with this software and use it in my class. Of course, the students also will engage with me all the times because the software are marvellous and extremely make us happy while using it.

What I learned in the past class 4
I learned about TV Pendidikan. In this class, during the presentation, I introduce the main webpage to the rest of my friends. I learned all the functions available in the TV Pendidikan. In future, I will use this website in the future for my teaching and learning process.

What I learned in the past class 3
I have learned on ‘Smart School’ in my previous class. I gained a lot of information on this topic and I like the concept of smart school in order to foster quality education in school. I welcome the concept of smart school to be applied in my teaching.
What I can understand about the concept teach by Miss Chin.
In this era of technology, being a teacher in an electronic classroom, I need to change my role from being information providers to facilitator in order to help my students know how to select information source, to make judgments about what they are downloading.
Smart school creating a curriculum where students learn how to learn so that they can continue their education throughout the rest of their lives. In short, high tech requires high touch because the key to success in the Information Age will be making the right judgments between awesome arrays of choices. Students are given choices to self-learning and choose own materials to update their skills of learning. As a teacher, I should be a facilitator in this electronic class.

What I learned in the past class 1
Thanks Fabian. By viewing your blog, finally I got some ideas on how to update my blog which seems very empty and dull without any information that I could share with my course mates. Actually I am confused and blurred on what I should write on my blog. Now, I have clear picture on what to do. Fabian, you deserve the praises from Dr RM. Well Done!
In the past classes, I did learn on the Interactive White Board (IWB). I enjoyed the class very much because I tried to use IWB board with the assistance from Sharil Sir. He had guided us very well during the class and showed step by step all the functions that is available on the IWB.
The conclusion on this learning that I could made is students will enjoy they class as they practice hands-on on the topic teach by their teacher rather than just being a passive listener. IWB encourages an ‘eyes up’ rather than ‘eyes down’ culture. The board helps teachers to see that their students are with them mentally and physically, and not lost somewhere in their own world. The students are attractive with the multi-color of words and even clearer words.
Beside that, teacher will go to class with empty-handed. Teachers just have to bring their laptops and thumb drive for the lessons. No more heavy text or reference books to the class. Teachers just have to well- prepared for the class. This meaning that teachers will have plenty of time for his/her lessons plan preparation.
In the class, teacher annotates the screen. Focus more on the discussion part. Thus, they spend less time with their back to the students writing on the board. Teacher will spend more time face-to-face with students and can deliver more good explanation to the students.
Now, I can write with my scrabble on the board. Because the IWB has the ability to convert it into a presentable text. Also can do spelling corrections and list sorting in any sequence or grouping that I want.
I also can save all my exercises and notes to be given to the next class. In the past I used to write the exercise again and again in every class that I teach. For example, if I have to teach 4 English classes, I have to write the exercises on the blackboard for all the classes. At the end of the day, I will have a terrible hand pain. Now, with IWB, I won’t face this type of problem. Yahooooo!, what a relief. IWB save me from the hell. He…he… Another problem that may arise, I don’t think that every school has IWB. I should not get too ambitious to use IWB in my future school especially if the school doesn’t provide one.
For my comprehension exercises, I can use video to let students watch a selected scene from the movie followed by comprehension questions. Thus, avoid students to read lengthy text or passage.
I can teach students on how to find information from the internet. Students will have self-learning and conducive learning environment. As a teacher I should guide them in finding abundant information from the net and students should actively engage in the class activities by searching the necessary information for their lessons.
Furthermore, for my Geography lessons, I can easily draw the bubble diagrams or cloud diagrams by using IWB and present it in the class. This type of teaching will make learning easier. They will be able to remember over-whelming theories which is in their lessons. The students will enjoy the class as their lessons are interactive.
Problems that I came across while using IWB.
I can’t use the pen properly. I should use it carefully as the pen doesn’t read joined up and cursive writing, so every letter need to written in a proper manner.
I should always watch out the movement of my hands.
The board can go into hibernation mode and automatically ‘turn off’. I have to wake it up again to continue using it. It’s not a big problem but it consumes time.
When I am writing on the board, my shadow will fall on the screen which will block the view for the students. At times, the shadow on the screen can be disconcerting and confuses me while I writing.
When I view data using the internet, the pages tend to hang frequently. It will disrupt the flow of my teaching.
The functions are limited. I have to download from other software to make my presentations more creative.
Last but not least, the world would be like hell to me if I’m asked to use the normal white board or black board. Once I get used to using the IWB, I won’t switch to the normal board.

morning all
morning all. it's been quite some time since i posted anything on this blog. classes have been interesting and interactive till now. learning lots of things on our education system. presentations have also given us the oppurtuinity to know the opinions of the other groups on both similar topic or a different topics.
for our 2nd presentation, we were required to talk about a hardware used in schools. our group had talked about the IWB i.e the importance and also the inconvinience during the usage. and also a small portion about iPod. groups with similar topic had presented about PDA and laptops. currently, schools have only succumbed to the usage of IWB and laptops. PDAs are quite convinient, but it has to be used individually in order to achieve an 'engaging' class.
nevertheless, the other topics i.e Sekolah Bistari and softwares were very informatiove as well. it gives you an idea of how you can use come of the suggested softwares to use in class.
iPOD is being used in Japan in education their children.
i suppose i have suddenly succumbed to writer's block now. nevertheless, till the next posting.
kind regards,

Hai
It has been a while since i posted my last blog. After a few weeks of classes I am more relaxed now. I have a better view and understanding over my studies. My friends have been kind to me in explaining new terms and ideas related to computer technology and internet. I am very impressed with the our class. The last weeks presentation on computer software and others have actually enlightened me. There is so many software like flash and hot potato, which can be used in teaching, making notes and also to create questions. I am glad we are learning them. Some of our friends with the IT background has the privilege of doing better. Their existence in the class helps the others to learn better. regards Selvi |

IWB part 1
Hello again and i have again found another very detailed article on the IWB(Interactive WhiteBoard) in the ;Modern English Teacher' magazine. One can obtain this magazine on the 2nd floor of the main UM library. i obtained this article from the April 2005, Vol 14, No 2 edition.
it was a very long and well explained article. however i could only finish half of the article, with some of the basic points taken.
apprently, there are 3 types of whiteboard usage i.e the infrared/ultrasound which has very minimal usage, next the passive whiteboard which is touch sensitive and finally the active whiteboard which the most commonly used type. the reason the last type being the most popular, due to its advanced usages (the name itself is self explanatory)
there are specially designed flipcharts that was desighned using software that controls the advanced functionality of the whiteboard. frankly saying, i cant really imagine the physical appearanace of it and mostly understand the actual functionality of this chart until i see a live example.
but mainly, the article explains the technical basis of the gadget and the ability to bring all audio, viseo and most importantly internet functions all in one.
and one of the speciality of this IWB is that it provides the basic necessaity to special children. functions have been created to serve these needy students to enable them to control objects on a more user friendly and less troublesome way. Now, thats what i call 'ultimate success', when you are able to make everyone happy.
unfortunately Dr. RM, I am still unable to obtain the direct link to these articles. however, those of you who are interested, can proceed to go to the main website of this magazine as i had included in the last posting as well. nevertheless:

hope to learn more on the IWB and hope to come across a flipchart.
have a good day ahead.

Engagement
Hi, everyone. I would like to share my experience in school on how I made form 1 students to engage in classroom discussion. The topic discussed was "Recycling".
I instructed my students to collect things that people normally throw away such as bottles, boxes, plastic products and toys.
During the lesson, these things were heaped in the middle of the room and the students sat in a circle around them. First, I showed the class how I had used a mineral water bottle into a beautiful vase. I described the procedures to make and decorate my model. My presentation was to serve as a supportive base for my students to describe their own models later. In other words, teacher demonstrated how learners could make something and then talk and write about the creations.
In describing their products orally, it was evident that students self-corrected with their grammar and vocabulary usage that they always use in daily communication. Thus, I can say that existing or prior knowledge is activating in learning process. And I would make corrections for any misuse of the English Language in grammar or even their sequence connectors used. In this way, learners able to learn new words or phrases besides their demonstration skills. Students worked on communicating their thoughts on their model and focused on the decisions they made in order to make the model look authentic. Thus, I can be sure that their new knowledge is demonstrated from their thought about what they were to say to the class. I hope in future if there is any rubbish or debris that could be recycled, my students will take them and began to model-making them as instructed in my class. If that happened, I can say that my learners are applying their new knowledge in real world problem solving. Isn't it?
In presenting their ideas in written form, students again used language in the context of a recent experience. The lessons had provided learners with the opportunity to make authentic use of oral and written language. Many teachers are making mistake when they discussing about essay writing. Oftenly, they will give a few sample of essay followed by class discussion and then ask students to proceed with their own writing. This type of engagement could make our children bored and blurred on what they are going to do. Let them engage with the real world situation and automatically they could generate as many idea on what they are going to do. As Dr RM told us, don't ever enrage students with the boring class but pay more attention and have 100% eye-contact with them.
Last but not least, all the best to my beloved classmate in engaging students. As long as, we as a future teacher to-be can choose the most appropriate teaching materials to suit the cultural, cognitive and proficiency level of our students. Hopely, that WE wouldn't have any problem in 'Engagement'.

This is new to me, but very interesting. i am sure it will attract the students. i did do some reading but was umable to take down the names of the reading material. i knew from the reading material that the IWB was introduced in 1990's. Introducing it in the schools would certainly raise the interest of the students in studies altogether.
Thats all for now.

1st day of class
a very inspiring and motivating class both emotionally and academicaly as i had also answered to the question 'what do you expect from this class', that i would like to learn to use new gadgets (including the Smart Board) to make my teaching more interesting an accomodative for my students in the future. it was also the first time i am actually seeing a Smart Board. which we have envisioned, to use when teaching in the future.
did some reading over our freetime today, and eventually came across an article written by a fellow acedemic on the benefits of blogging to students. apprently, she has used the blogging method to encourage her/his students to write on anything ranging from their opinions to firing discussions, provided they write in full sentence (no short forms) and of course with no foul language or violent firing, involved. (Ref to this article - Modern English Teacher, April 2004, 'Using weblogs to encourage English language' by Michael Vallance. Very inspiring. will use this a method to improve my English as well. so, Dr. Maznah, your idea of blogging will certainly lead us to better and more interesting path, of improving our usage of English'

hope the above will be of some help. till our next posting. good day.

First Day
Today we learn on 'Engage' and 'Enrage'.
How to activate existing knowledge in students , add new knowledge, demonstration, application and finally integrating in their works.
We should not have FEAR in engaging, personalized, empowering, virtual learning, learner centric and physical contact.
Students should engage with learning process, context, and object of study.
